cotswolds & cheltenham photographer Claire Westaway
the look of love
This guide is here to help you consider the location which best suits your family and will give your photographs the look you'll love! So have a look at the different photography locations I use in and around cheltenham and the cotswolds for your outdoor photography session
let’s go…
Cleeve Hill
Easy Parking and Access
Incredible open views over Cheltenham
Plenty of space for children to run
Long grasses and wild flowers in summer to add texture and colour and golden colours in the Autumn
A variety of different settings to use
The open view means a later sunset and session start time
Crickley Hill
Easy parking and access
Incredible open views over Cheltenham
Plenty of space for children to run
Blossoms and buttercups in the Spring; long grasses in the Summer
A variety of different settings to use
The open view means a later sunset and session start time
Cheltenham Town
Easy parking & access
The beautiful Georgian architecture and iconic buildings of Cheltenham serve as our backdrop
Perfect for families who are local to Cheltenham and want their hometown to be part of their photos or for people who are visiting the town and want to remember their time here.
I suggest using this location early in the morning before it becomes too busy with people and cars or at sunset on Sundays.
Pittville Park
Easy parking and access
Iconic Cheltenham location with beautiful architecture as the background
Plenty of space for children to run
I suggest using this location in the early morning or sunset to enjoy this location when its quieter.
Daisy Meadow
Seasonal - June and July only
Beautiful giant daisies and wild flowers
The meadow is really wild and the flowers tall. We try to stay within the paths to avoid damaging the flowers
Autumn Meadow
Easy parking; accessible via some steps
Beautiful Autumn colours and textures
Plenty of space for kids to run but also quite contained.
Perfect for morning or afternoon session
Woodland
Early morning session only
Easy parking and access
Smaller location so good for little ones or a beautiful woodland walk for a couples’ session
Avenue of Redwood trees for beautiful framing
Cotswold Village
You may be staying in a Cotswolds village or town while you visit the area. If I have enough advance warning to scope the area beforehand or already know it, then this can work as a location but is dependent on distance and how busy the area is.
There are also a number of Cotswold villages which I have used in the past so even if you’re not staying there but would like this style of location as your backdrop then let me know.
It’s worth noting that ‘The Cotswolds’ actually covers a really big area so if you’re visiting it’s worth checking the map to see where these different villages are in relation to where you’re staying.
Take a look at some specific village examples below…
Chipping Campden
We take a stroll round the village, working our way from the village square and the historic market hall, past rows of Cotswold cottages and finishing at the tree lined path to the church.
A 5 minute drive from Chipping Campden is Dovers Hill so if you’re happy to hop in the car, we can also finish the session with some more rural (and hopefully a sunset!) shot.
Lower Slaughter
One of the iconic Cotswold villages. We follow the river through the village reaching the historic water mill and the little bridges over the water.
Being such a pretty setting, it is also a very popular place to visit. And there is very limited parking. So this location only works at specific times of day and preferably on a week-day.
Little Barrington
The smallest village I use - and so quiet! There is a row of Cotswold cottages just by the stream where we can play, plus a walk along the lane with houses in the background.
Castle Combe
Once voted the prettiest village in the country, Castle Combe is a beautiful setting. It’s actually very small with the iconic view looking up the village from the stream the main focal point.
It also gets incredibly busy with tourists so this is also a location which only works at certain times of day and preferably on a week-day. These photos were taken at sunrise which is how we had the place to ourselves!
